途方もない大著が4巻本として日本の読者に送られた。ヨーロッパの歴史を詳しく、幅広く、そして実におもしろく描いた作品『Europe: A History』の邦訳が、1年あまりで我々の前に並べられたのである。まずもって訳者の労を多としなければならないし、その労にふさわしくまことに見事な翻訳である。それにしてもこの書物のスケールの大きさには恐れ入るしかないし、目配りが行き届いていること、これまた驚嘆するしかない。ヨーロッパの成立に始まり、転変ただならぬこの世界を時間の流れに沿って描くだけでも気の遠くなるようなものだが、それを著者の専門である東欧圏への目配りを十分行いつつ書いていくのだから、地理的な広がりという点からも類書は見出せないと言えるものだ。普通こうしたスケールの本となれば、重要な史実を網羅して、しかし時に事実の羅列が読者を倦（う）ませる危険があるものだが、本書にはそうした懸念は無用である。なにしろやたらとおもしろいエピソードが満載で、本文で足りないとなると、「カプセル」と名づけられたコラムでさらに次々と追加が行われる。ご用とお急ぎの方は、このコラムだけを拾い読みしてもいい。とはいうものの、本書の醍醐味は長きにわたるヨーロッパの歴史のうねりを縦横無尽に描き出す、いわば歴史絵巻のごとき筆致にあるわけで、それを味わうにはじっくりと最初から読んでいくに勝るものはない。そしてその歴史のうねりとともに、もうひとつ大きな魅力は登場する人物たちの個性あふれる姿であって、1000年前のヨーロッパの辺境に住む人間が、まるでつい昨日会った人物であるかのごとく感じられてしまうのだ。その最大の理由は、やはり著者の文章にあるのだろう。何しろデイヴィスは、どんなに偉い人間を描いても、あるいはどんなに悲惨なできごとを描いても、常に冗談を忘れないのである。日本史もこういう風に描いてほしいものだ。（小林章夫）

The monumental, four-volume work has reached Japanese readers. Europe: A History, a detailed, exhaustive, and fascinating account of European history, has finally been published in Japanese after just over a year. The translator’s hard work is undoubtedly impressive, and the translation lives up to it. The sheer scale of this work is truly remarkable, and the attention to detail is equally astonishing.
Beginning with the formation of Europe and chronicling the extraordinary changes that occurred over the centuries, the book has an unparalleled geographical scope. Although it usually covers important historical facts, there is always a risk that readers might be overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information. This book, however, avoids such concerns. It is full of captivating anecdotes, and when the main text is not enough, additional notes appear in columns called “capsules.” If you are in a hurry, you can simply skim these columns.
Yet the real pleasure of reading this book lies in Davies’s writing style, which, like a historical illustrated scroll, freely presents the long and turbulent history of Europe. To fully appreciate it, it is best read carefully from the very beginning. Beyond the sweeping history, another great attraction is the extraordinary personalities who appear, making people living on the fringes of Europe a thousand years ago feel as if they had met just yesterday. This is largely due to the author’s writing style. No matter how remarkable a figure Davies portrays, or how tragic an event he describes, he never fails to include a touch of humor. I wish the history of Japan could also be presented in this way.
